Shop Sets Standard in Retail Therapy

Award winning visitor destination, Harewood House near Leeds, has re-launched its visitor shop.  The refreshed and re-stocked Courtyard Shop sells designer house and food items, much sourced locally for the freshest and the very best, and table and giftware items from the UK’s favourite designers and manufacturers, some of whom  rarely supply outside of London.

With its fresh make-over, new stock and designer interior, the shop isn’t about padded hangers and lavender bags.   Good on the eye, key brands are cleverly combined with local designers to give the shop a mix of must haves.  Gorgeous items include leading young artist Donna Wilson’s quirky creature furnishings, high quality meats farmed on the Harewood grounds, Sheffield based David Mellor’s exclusive tableware collection, sweet treats from Art of Mallows and Dixie Kitchen, and wine and beers, including Harewood’s very own Harewood Gold created from its home grown hops.

The Courtyard shop is under the successful and experienced direction of shop manager, Lynne Melton-Long, who specialises in high-end retail.  Lynne has succeeded in giving the shop a new lease of life. “Our vision is one of excellence; we’re really excited to stock some of the country’s best homewares and confectionaries supporting local farmers and designers.  We want the shopping experience at Harewood to be good on the eye as well as the tummy.  I’ve worked hard to source designer brands from all over the UK, including renowned purveyors of cheese and chutney to Her Majesty Paxton & Whitfield (incidentally the only suppliers of UK made pickled onions), wines from Latitude Wines and gift items from master cutler David Mellor.  Local designer items include paperware from The Wit Shop from Hyde Park in Leeds, Catherine Lascelles’s meats from Gray Montagne and breads from Bondgate Bakery in Otley.  If we can support emerging designers and sell their wares alongside the big boys, then our customers can set their own style and really enjoy the shopping experience.”

The Courtyard Shop is open 10am to 5.30pm 7 days a week while the Grounds are open to the public, free entry to Harewood members (who also enjoy a 10% discount) and accessible with a grounds ticket.  Lynne has a schedule of shopping events in the planning, with the first on 6th September with the Summer Night Market at the Courtyard, which includes live music, barbeque, wine and beer tastings, vintage clothing and loads more retail heaven.

Beaulieu also partnered with the Land Rover Experience, West Country to offer Simply 4x4 entrants and attraction visitors the opportunity to try Beaulieu’s very own off-road Forest Drive either in their own 4x4s or as a passenger in a Land Rover Experience vehicle.  For many, this was the highlight of the day and all who took part declared it an excellent course with just the right amount of mud!

Throughout the day Beaulieu’s visitors had the opportunity to vote for their favourite vehicle on display in the People’s Choice Awards. The winner, who received a 60th anniversary edition Beaulieu Trophy from Beaulieu’s Commercial Director, Stephen Munn, was Dave Wheeler with his 1967 Land Rover Series 2A. Dave has spent three years renovating the vehicle and is currently restoring a 1972 Series 3.

Runners-up were Vernon Hibberd in a 1988 MK2 Fiat Panda 4x4 purchased this year by Vernon after it had spent five years in a London lock-up, and Stuart Hill from Poole, with his VW Golf Country.  Only 7,500 of these left-hand drive vehicles were built, for the German market, and there are currently only 26 known examples in the UK. Following the awards the winners took part in a cavalcade of the most popular vehicles, around the Beaulieu attraction.

Simply 4x4 is part of a growing calendar of Simply rallies which has rapidly expanded to include a wide variety of themes covering many makes and models. All Simply rallies are run and organised by Beaulieu and take place in the grounds of the National Motor Museum. For more information please visit www.beaulieuevents.co.uk

A Medieval Summer at Harewood: Summer Exhibitions and more from August to October 2012

‘Medieval Harewood’ continues this summer with an exploration of the medieval history of Harewood encompassing the Church, Castle, Grounds, Gawthorpe Excavation and Terrace Gallery in the House. A clever mix of the creative, visual, contemporary and historical, displays combine archaeological finds, with artistic responses, plus workshops, events and activities, that lead you on a path to discover Harewood’s medieval past – a legacy that is revealed through cleverly devised strands which draw us into this history.
One of these strands is the recently revealed Harewood Castle, the Grade I listed 14th century ruin, as such since the mid 17th century, which has now undergone major conservation.  Recently opened, it encourages visitors to find out more about the history of Harewood and its landscape, and is open for accompanied group visits on selected dates this season.  It provides an experience of Medieval Harewood which begins our exploration of Harewood’s ancient landscape, which has been occupied since pre-history.

The recent excavation of the Gawthorpe Hall site in partnership with the University of York uncovers the story of the lost medieval manor house which preceded Harewood House.  Finds from Gawthorpe Hall, are available for visitors to see in the Terrace Gallery and include a wonderful stone gargoyle, a delicate silver-heart ring, a Bronze Age arrowhead, porcelain, pottery, buttons and unbelievably dainty thimble and dressmaking pins – a glorious combination of everyday and privilege.  With the addition of architectural fragments and the original 1698 plan of the Harewood estate and sections reproduced from 18th century illustrations of the hall, visitors can build a picture, marvel at medieval craftsmanship and wonder at the stories behind the finds.

All Saints’ Church, located within the grounds at Harewood, acts as a hub for the strands and mixes the contemporary with the historical by showing a new digital fly-over of the medieval landscape and a useful Information Point.  Artists Eleanor Moreton, Susan Collins, Simon Warner and Diane Howse have provided their responses to the medieval history of Harewood, with new pieces of work including digital photography, painting and moving imagery exhibited in this medieval church and also in the renowned Terrace Gallery, situated Below Stairs in the House.  It’s not just about the tangible, the exhibition crosses all media with performance art playing a role with Simon Warner’s intrepid character ‘walking tours’ to the Castle and hidden areas of the grounds not usually accessible to visitors.

Medieval Harewood also offers a series of workshops, activities and tours.  Visitors can learn the basics of making traditional ceramics with a Traditional Ceramics Workshop (23rd Sept) and a Stained Glass Workshop (21st Oct) to discover the art of stained glass making.

A ‘Medieval Summer’ at Harewood provides multi-faceted opportunities for visitors of all ages and interests to enjoy what Harewood has to offer.  It works well for art lovers, history buffs, and those looking for something to appeal to all the family during fine or wet weather.  Harewood celebrates its past with an eye on the future and, combining these elements within this exhibition spread across the House, gardens and grounds, is just what it does best.

Beaulieu Goes Classic Car Crazy For Simply Classics, Sunday 26th August 2012

As part of its exciting event-filled August Bank Holiday Weekend, Beaulieu is looking forward to welcoming a host of classic cars to its picturesque parkland on Sunday 26th August for Simply Classics.

The rally, now in its second year, is open to all pre-1986 classic car and bikes, whether concours or classic. Owners have the opportunity to bring their vehicles to participate in the event, meet other like-minded enthusiasts, admire their vehicles and listen to the jazz band playing sets throughout the day.

Visitors to Beaulieu on that day will be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite vehicle on display in the People’s Choice Awards. In the afternoon a cavalcade of the most popular vehicles will take place around the Beaulieu attraction, and the winning vehicle and runner up will be announced in a prize-giving ceremony. The winning vehicle owner will receive a coveted special 60th anniversary edition Beaulieu Trophy, and the runner up, a trophy sponsored by Beaulieu-based Vintage Tyres in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

It will be accompanied by a Napier Bentley – a 1968 one-off special build vintage racing car with a 24 litre Napier Sea Lion W12 aeroplane engine. The engine has three banks of four very large stub exhausts, one of which points straight out of the side of the car. When it’s started up, the sound is likened to a World War I bi-plane!

On Sunday 12th August, join the droves of Land Rovers, Jeeps and Range Rovers heading for Beaulieu to take part in the first ever Simply 4x4 event. All 4x4 vehicles, of any age or model, are welcome, from classic Land Rovers to brand new BMW 4x4s.

Owners can display their vehicles in the parkland, take part in the event activities, and enjoy all the delights of the Beaulieu attraction, including the National Motor Museum’s exciting BOND IN MOTION exhibition, which showcases 50 original vehicles from the James Bond films as well as behind-the-scenes footage from some of the most thrilling vehicle stunt sequences.

Beaulieu has partnered with the Land Rover Experience, West Country, to give visitors to Simply 4x4 the opportunity to try Beaulieu’s very own off-road Forest Drive. Event participants can book a space at a cost of £25 per vehicle to take their own 4x4 on the 45 minute course, and can also enjoy a second drive after 3pm for a discounted rate of £15 per vehicle, when booked with the first drive. To book in advance visit www.beaulieushop.co.uk or telephone 01590 612888 and on the day visit the Information Caravan on arrival to reserve a time slot –given on a first come first serve basis.

Visitors who do not have a 4x4 but would like to try the course can book a slot in a Land Rover Experience vehicle. Land Rover Experience’s trained instructors can take you on the course for £40 to drive, or £10 for a passenger ride. Please note that to drive you must be aged over 25 and have both parts of your full UK driving license with you on the day. These spaces are very limited and can only be booked in advance by telephone on 01590 612888 when you will be allocated a specific time slot.

Please note the Forest Drive is separately charged and prices do not include the entrance fee to the event or Beaulieu attraction. The first group will leave at 10am with the final rotation leaving at 4.30pm. Terms and conditions apply. There may be some slots available on the day, but to avoid disappointment it is advisable to book in advance.

Throughout the day visitors will be given the opportunity to vote for their favourite vehicle on display in the People’s Choice Awards. In the afternoon a cavalcade of the most popular vehicles will parade around the Beaulieu attraction, and the winning vehicle and runner up will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony. The winning vehicle owner will receive a coveted special 60th anniversary edition Beaulieu Trophy, with the runner up presented with a bottle of Beaulieu Bubbly.

For entrants arriving on the day in their 4x4 vehicle and participating in the event, individual ticket prices are £10 per adult and £5 per child.

Book advance tickets online at www.beaulieushop.co.uk or by telephone on 01590 612888, which you can also call for information on group/club entry. For all enquiries regarding 4x4-related trade stands, telephone 01590 614614.

Entry into the Beaulieu parkland with your 4x4 vehicle is from 9.30am with refreshments available in the Brabazon Restaurant.
