During May, Leeds Castle in Kent has a rich variety of daily events and attractions with activities to suit visitors of all ages. There are plenty of tours and trails to discover, many of which are included with your entrance ticket.  Annual tickets are valid for 12 months, so you can pay once and visit all year round or upgrade a day ticket before departing.

'Outrageous Fortune: Growing Up at Leeds Castle' Book Signing: Step back in time on Saturday 10 May with The Honourable Anthony Russell, Grandson of Lady Baillie, the last private owner of Leeds Castle, for a book signing of his memoir ‘Outrageous Fortune: Growing Up at Leeds Castle'.  Join in free talks at 11am or 3pm in the Maiden’s Tower Garden.

Museums at Night: Leeds Castle will be joining other heritage properties for the Museums at Night festival on Friday 16 May with an exclusive evening at The Gatehouse showcasing the new exhibition of the history of the Castle. The event takes place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and includes a private talk with the Head Gardener in the beautiful Culpeper Garden.  Tickets are £7 bookable in advance on the Leeds Castle website.

Supercar Seige: Get up close to hundreds of iconic supercars on the Castle lawns on Sunday 18 May. The event, run in aid of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Children’s Fund, will include a military marching band and ‘British Motorsport’ section. A Merlin helicopter will be on static display with a chance to explore inside the cockpit (subject to aircraft availability). For a donation to charity, visitors can take a ‘dream ride’ in one of the supercars, driven by the owners.

The Chelsea Fringe: On Thursday 22 May Leeds Castle will celebrate The Chelsea Fringe.  See a ‘flower bedecked punt’ drifting gracefully on the moat featuring a colourful arrangement of seasonal flowers from the Castle grounds created by the gifted Castle Florist Louise Roots. Local school Invicta Grammar will be singing and reciting poetry in The Culpeper Garden where there will also be a special flower trail set up for children.  For garden enthusiasts, the Head Gardener will be giving specialist talks.

May Bank Holiday Fun – Saturday 24 to Monday 26 May

Circus Skills Workshops will be running on the Pavillion Lawn from Saturday 24 to Monday 26 May for children and adults of all ages. Test your balance and co-ordination with stilts and spinning plates, juggling, hula-hoops, diabolos and have-a-go on the juggling machines. On Sunday 25 May and Monday 26 May children can re-enact the legends of ‘Heroes, Heroines and Hoods’ in Hilarious History, a fun and interactive outdoor theatre event. The stories of Robin Hood and the Silver Arrow, What-ho Henry and Horatio’s Last Hurrah will keep children entertained as they take the lead roles in these hilarious short plays.

Jousting with The Knights of Royal England - 27 May 2014 to 1 June 2014

The Knights of Royal England will return on horseback ready to entertain children and adults during half term week with action packed medieval activities and entertainment. Watch displays of spectacular daredevil stunts, medieval weaponry, falls, fights and galloping horses. Meanwhile, the Knights school includes hobby horse jousting, mini battles and try‑on‑armour for younger children. There will also be a mini medieval market to explore.

Flowers, Food and Family Fun

The spring sunshine provides the ideal opportunity to enjoy a gentle stroll through the beautiful English cottage-style Culpeper Garden full of colour and variety at this time of year.  Meanwhile, newly-planted pine trees and cactus plants add variety to the exotic Lady Baillie Mediterranean Garden overlooking the Great Lake.

Float gently through the ancient arches in an elegant wooden punt for a leisurely 20 minute glide on the moat of the Castle. Suitable for all ages, available weekends and school holidays, punting at Leeds Castle is excellent value for money at £5 for adults and £3 for children. A discounted family ticket is available and there is no need to pre-book.

The whole family can enjoy the falconry demonstration, taking place daily at 2pm in the Falconry Arena, while the new-look toddlers’ playground ‘Squires’ Courtyard’ provides entertainment for children aged two to six.  For older children the Knight’s Realm adventure playground, maze and grotto are perfect for burning up some energy in Half Term.

Walk, Talk, Run and Discover

Throughout May a series of walks, talks and activities will be running including Meet the Falconer, Wildlife, Woodland and Parkland Walks, Garden Tours and the new Leeds Castle Run Club meeting every Wednesday evening at 7pm.

Behind the scenes tours give an opportunity to glimpse life at the Castle through the ages from life below stairs as a servant in the 1930s back to the colourful tales of life during the Middle Ages. Learn about the Royal and private owners of the Castle through the stories behind the paintings and tales told through the architecture of the buildings. Annual tickets cost £24 for adults; £21 for seniors and visitors with disabilities (carer goes free); £16 for children (under 4’s free). Leeds Castle is located near Maidstone in Kent just off Junction 8 of the M20 within easy reach of London. Grounds open at 10am daily and the Castle is open from 10.30am. Last admission is 4.30pm and gates close at 6pm.

Leeds Castle Knights' Glampsite

Our winner provides a rather different accommodation. Last year Leeds Castle laid out a ‘Knight’s Glampsite’. The idea came from the fact that Henry VIII’s procession to the famous Field of the Cloth of Gold in 1520 stopped at this historic castle en route.  Guests are accommodated in specially commissioned double pavilions in jaunty stripes with really civilised bathrooms, wood burning stoves and luxurious furnishings incorporating silk, wool and fur. The tents are named after Henry VIII’s champions and this year a Knight’s School is planned to give families something extra.

It is camping certainly, but camping with a twist, more reminiscent of a top of the range safari camp but with a distinctly mediaeval flair.  Last year’s Knightly Glampers all particularly enjoyed the experience of having privileged access to the castle after the general public had left and this is all the better now, Leeds Castle opens its restaurant for evening diners.

Beaulieu

Christmas at Beaulieu is a time of magic with fun, activities and entertainment for all.  Beaulieu’s festive celebrations (21 December – 5 January) will feature carol singing around the Grand Piano in the decorated Palace House complete with a magnificent Christmas tree.  Victorian characters will be on show- to divulge fascinating details on life – upstairs and downstairs at Christmas time.

Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace’s will be decorated for a ‘Dickensian’ Christmas (9 November – 13 December) with plenty to see and do, from late night shopping, storytelling, carol singers, Santa’s grotto and more. The renowned Living Crafts for Christmas (15 - 17 November) will also take place showcasing a series of high quality and contemporary creations from over 150 British designer-makers. Burghley House

Burghley House’s Crafts for Christmas - (28 November –1st December) will be the perfect place to pick up some very special presents featuring a wide range of new products and ideas. Castle Howard

Top Visitor Attraction Acknowledges Volunteers

House Steward

National Volunteer Week, 1 – 7 June, recognises the hard work and dedication of volunteers across the country, including an army of volunteers working at Harewood House, visitor attraction and educational charitable Trust in Leeds.

The volunteers are the life-blood of Harewood, generously giving their time to support the work that Harewood Trust does and sharing their passion and interest for Harewood. Many of the team of volunteers have worked at Harewood for a number of years, acquiring anecdotes and tales as if the House were their own.  Harewood is an educational charitable Trust that relies entirely on its own endeavours to meet its funding needs and volunteers make a significant contribution in enabling the Trust to deliver a first class service to its visitors. There are endless volunteer opportunities at Harewood, ranging from Room Stewards, Shuttle Drivers, Gardeners, Bird Garden Rangers to Bookshop Helpers. In return, volunteers receive free admission to Harewood House and grounds, and help to preserve one of Britain’s most historic treasure houses.

Volunteering at Harewood has inspired me to further my studies at Leeds University, and I am currently earning my degree in History of Art with Museum Studies. I would definitely recommend volunteering at Harewood as it is a chance to keep this history alive, meet new friends, gain experience and confidence.”

“I started volunteering to get some ‘me time’ away from the children. I can really recommend it for all parents, it’s very therapeutic with no clocks and no four walls. What's on at Harewood this Spring

Spring is just around the corner and Harewood House, situated a stone’s throw from Harrogate and Leeds, has a jam-packed event schedule for the whole family to enjoy this May.

Medieval Faire at Harewood

Returning for a second year, Harewood hosts a Medieval Faire on Sun 26th and Mon 27th May. With an anticipated 500 re-enactors, battles, archery, jousting, authentic market, encampments and a real archaeological dig, it’s set to be an action-packed weekend for the whole family. Set in the superb Grounds of Harewood, complete with historic 13th century Castle ruins and a 15th century Church to discover, it’s the North’s most spectacular medieval event. Day tickets are available starting at £15, but with so much to see and do you can make a weekend of it, camp and really engross yourself in the medieval atmosphere with tickets from just £25.

2013 also brings the seventh Kite Festival & Teddy Bears’ Picnic to Harewood on Sat 18th and Sun 19th May. Little ones get free admission if they bring their favourite fluffy friend for the teddy bear kite drop, and to accompany them to the teddy bears’ picnic. Enjoy a Spring day as the skies are filled with an array of colourful kites, bring your own and join in the fun or watch the experts, the Northern Kite Group, across the beautiful vista overlooking the House.

The whole family can get out and about and immerse themselves in all things ‘play’ on Sun 5th and Mon 6th May at A Festival of Play. Embrace your inner child and enjoy high ropes, adrenaline zorbing, freerunning, interactive workshops, storytelling, donkey rides and an exciting fairground to name just a few. LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre Manchester are also bringing a thrilling assortment of LEGO activities for young and old alike. The popular Museums at Night returns for another year on the evening of 16th May with ‘Harewood at Twilight’. Experience exclusive House and collection talks, refreshments and food on the picturesque, candlelit Terrace and the noted physiognomist Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801) returns for one night only to give instruction in the noble art of Shades in our silhouette portraiture workshop. Christmas at Harewood - Indulge in the magic of Christmas.

Enjoy a traditional Christmas at Harewood this year - open weekends from 24th November to 16th December. Harewood House, between Leeds and Harrogate, has pulled out all the stops for a truly traditional Christmas, with seasonal crafts, activities and merry events for all the family.

Every weekend little ones can meet Father Christmas by the Fireside in the Servants Hall (from 11:00am - 3:30pm). They can snuggle up and enjoy a festive tale and receive an early Christmas gift made especially in the Elves workshop. (£12.50 pre-booked half hour session, includes entry to the grounds.) Historically, Below Stairs is where Christmas was created for guests on the State Floor, you can get in the spirit with cookery demonstrations in the   Old Kitchen and sample some delectable treats. Or, enjoy some retail therapy in our festive Gourmet Shop filled with irresistible goodies in our transformed Pastry Room.  Then you can visit the grandest rooms on the State Floor which will be sumptuously dressed for Christmas (open 12 – 3pm) giving you a sneak peek of how the family celebrate.

 
Music has long played a part in Christmas at Harewood and you can experience a magical ‘Carols by Candlelight’ service by St Aidan’s Choir and Brass Band on 6th December in Harewood’s All Saints’ Church. Enjoy warming festive refreshments and treats in the unique atmosphere of this Medieval Church. During your visit, explore the award-winning Harewood Grounds and Gardens for an adventurous walk in your woollies and pay a visit to Father Christmas’s faithful friends in the penguin pool, feeding at 2pm.

Shop Sets Standard in Retail Therapy

Award winning visitor destination, Harewood House near Leeds, has re-launched its visitor shop.  The refreshed and re-stocked Courtyard Shop sells designer house and food items, much sourced locally for the freshest and the very best, and table and giftware items from the UK’s favourite designers and manufacturers, some of whom  rarely supply outside of London.

With its fresh make-over, new stock and designer interior, the shop isn’t about padded hangers and lavender bags.   Good on the eye, key brands are cleverly combined with local designers to give the shop a mix of must haves.  Gorgeous items include leading young artist Donna Wilson’s quirky creature furnishings, high quality meats farmed on the Harewood grounds, Sheffield based David Mellor’s exclusive tableware collection, sweet treats from Art of Mallows and Dixie Kitchen, and wine and beers, including Harewood’s very own Harewood Gold created from its home grown hops.  

The Courtyard shop is under the successful and experienced direction of shop manager, Lynne Melton-Long, who specialises in high-end retail.  Lynne has succeeded in giving the shop a new lease of life. “Our vision is one of excellence; we’re really excited to stock some of the country’s best homewares and confectionaries supporting local farmers and designers.  We want the shopping experience at Harewood to be good on the eye as well as the tummy.  I’ve worked hard to source designer brands from all over the UK, including renowned purveyors of cheese and chutney to Her Majesty Paxton & Whitfield (incidentally the only suppliers of UK made pickled onions), wines from Latitude Wines and gift items from master cutler David Mellor.  Local designer items include paperware from The Wit Shop from Hyde Park in Leeds, Catherine Lascelles’s meats from Gray Montagne and breads from Bondgate Bakery in Otley.  If we can support emerging designers and sell their wares alongside the big boys, then our customers can set their own style and really enjoy the shopping experience.” 

The Courtyard Shop is open 10am to 5.30pm 7 days a week while the Grounds are open to the public, free entry to Harewood members (who also enjoy a 10% discount) and accessible with a grounds ticket.  Lynne has a schedule of shopping events in the planning, with the first on 6th September with the Summer Night Market at the Courtyard, which includes live music, barbeque, wine and beer tastings, vintage clothing and loads more retail heaven.

Summer at the Treasure Houses of England - Great Days Out

Forget old-fashioned images of historic houses - today’s enigmatic Treasure Houses present something for everyone with a wealth of entertainment from special exhibitions, superb shopping and afternoon tea to children’s play areas, discovery tours and activity days. Discover Capability Brown landscapes and contemporary sculpture gardens while the kids amuse themselves in spiraling mazes.

Presenting a spectacular schedule of summer events, from live theatre performances, free runners, drive –in movies and historical characters, to dressing up boxes and quiz trails – not to mention an array of wildlife, farm animals, cycle trails and walking paths - expect an animated and action-packed experience for all the family.

Beaulieu’s popular drop-in summer workshops for younger visitors take place on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout August.  Supported by the Caravan Club and linking in with the attraction’s BOND IN MOTION exhibition, the workshops will be on a Special Agent theme with poster and badge making, and model building with Meccano.

 

Families can hear about the daily life of people who lived and worked at Blenheim Palace in the 1920s, through the eyes of Mrs Crumpet the ‘Head Gardeners Wife’ with costumed entertainment ‘Stories from the Gardens’ bringing history to life over the summer holidays (21 July – 31 August).  Expend their energy with Blenheim Palace’s Active Spring Kids Camp (30 July - 3 August, 9am to 5pm, 7 to 16 years) where a variety of activities include archery/swing building, team building/adventure games, survival skills/cooking and more.   Take a trip by train to The Pleasure Gardens, where a bevy of exotic butterflies await.  Muddle round the Marlborough Maze, or let the kids loose on the action-packed Adventure Playground.

Burghley’s Garden of Surprises combines fun and history, featuring a moss house, the swivelling Caesar busts, basins of water, jets and a mirrored maze – all designed for optimum enjoyment for all ages.

 

Embark on a family adventure at Castle Howard for a magical and memorable day out.  Jump on the land-train and go wild down at the Lakeside Adventure Playground where 17-high energy, confidence-building pieces of equipment will amuse and entertain kids and adults alike.  Catch Castle Howard’s boat and set sail across the Great Lake to spy the wildlife and discover the parkland with their new illustrated trail and Geoffrey the Lion. And don’t miss their Get Active Weekend (26 – 27 August) to get stuck in to a range of new activities for all the family from weird and wonderful bikes to archery and climbing.
 
Visit Chatsworth this summer for a season of family fun in the house, garden, farmyard and adventure playground.   Children and adults can explore the new Climbing Forest in the adventure playground, meet lots of friendly animals and enjoy an array of free seasonal activities in the farmyard.

 


 

Harewood invites visitors into its beautiful Bird Garden to see many species of rare and exotic birds from all over the world, including penguins, flamingos and parrots. Follow up with a spell in the Adventure Playground and climb, clamber, slide and swing your way around. Inside the house, play dress up in servants’ clothes and step back to Victorian times or discover the hidden delights behind the cupboard doors…

From a fun children’s quiz to Horrible Histories written by Terry Deary – Hatfield House presents an eclectic mix of entertainment. Bloody Hollow is an exciting adventure play area featuring a rope bridge, aerial runway and a tree house, plus all the favourites such as swings, springies and a seesaw. Don’t forget to have a tractor ride and meet all the animals at Hatfield Park Farm.

 Holkham Hall’s Bygones Museum houses a vast collection of more than 4,000 fascinating exhibits ranging from mechanical toys and agricultural tools to vintage cars and massive steam engines dating from the Victorian period to the mid-1900s.  Outside, hit the cycle park to explore even more of the estate – and new for 2012 – both adults and youngsters can savour the experience with a recumbent (lie back cycle) or scooter!  Don’t miss Holkham’s watery world too with leisurely lake cruises and boat hire, or if you’re feeling adventurous, try water zorbing to really get your heart racing.  Then schedule in a visit to the beach at Holkham - one of the largest Nature Reserves and most unspoilt and beautiful stretches of sand in the country.


At Leeds Castle, dive into the The Knights’ Realm Playground - a huge adventure playground built entirely in wood. Climb the Maiden’s Tower, scale the Revetment Wall, joust along an aerial runway, cross the perilous bridge between the New Castle and Gloriette and explore the Secret Tunnels. Slides, bash bags and rope walkways all add to the fun.  Throw into the mix a Toddlers' Play Area, spiralling Maze and underworld Grotto, Turf Maze and daily falconry displays (except Tuesday’s & Thursday’s) – and Leeds Castle ensures a formidable formula of fun for all the family.
