Capture The Castle - Castle Howard Photography Competition

Castle Howard, one of Yorkshire’s grandest country houses, is inviting amateur photographers to put their camera skills to the test and capture the castle, its grounds and gardens as well as the wider estate in a new photography competition ‘Castle Howard: Through My Eyes’, from Saturday 14 March to Thursday 31 December.

From its imposing architecture, sweeping vistas, lakes, woodland, monuments and fountains to the formal gardens, flora and fauna and rolling Howardian Hills, Castle Howard offers endless opportunities to be inspired.

Nick Howard, who will judge the competition, commented: ‘Having grown up at Castle Howard I am well aware of the unique qualities of our beautiful Yorkshire landscape, with every season bringing something new to admire and enjoy. As a keen photographer myself, I feel inspired every time I venture out, camera in hand, and look forward to reviewing the many fantastic entries I am sure we will receive.’

Unique exhibition opens at Harewood House

‘Objectivity; the art of useful things’, 16th February to 1st September

Perfect for a day out this half term, Harewood House, Leeds, kick-starts the year with the extraordinary exhibition ‘Objectivity: the art of useful things’, an eclectic mix of objects collected by artist and collector David Usborne. Usborne’s fascination for useful objects he considers ‘accidental masterpieces’ has created a visual exhibition which captures the imagination of all ages. Catch the exhibition early and visitors have the chance to enter a competition during half term (16th – 24th Feb) to win a day ticket for their family or a £25 voucher to spend in the Courtyard Café, by guessing the use of a mysterious object. Entry to the exhibition is included in a Grounds & Below Stairs ticket, and free to Harewood members. David Usborne’s extraordinary collection of useful tools will be on display in the Servants' Hall at Harewood until 1st September
