Beaulieu Boatjumble Back In Force

K3 Bluebird Starting Up
A wonderful day was had by all at Beaulieu’s 2013 Boatjumble, with the crowds out in force sniffing out plenty of boating bargains. Following the cancellation of last year’s event due to dangerous high winds, all eyes were on the skies this year, but there was no need to worry, as the weather remained dry and fine, if a little chilly.

The event was very successful with an enjoyable atmosphere and visitor numbers were on a par with 2011 at 8,834. The Boatmall was bustling with activity as usual, with plenty of people browsing for new boats, clothing and the latest hi-tech sailing gadgets, and an array of used boats were up for sale in the Boatmart, from classics to nearly new.

Beaulieu Events Manager, Judith Maddox, said: “We were delighted that so many visitors returned to the Boatjumble after the disappointment of last year’s event being cancelled. Exhibitors reported good sales on the day and lots of visitors bagged themselves an excellent bargain. The delivery vehicles were kept busy all day taking heavy and bulky purchases back to the car parks.”

There were certainly very few people going home empty-handed, with sale items ranging from complete boats to small chandlery items. This year the Trunk Traders area was particularly popular, with over 150 spaces taken, and proved to be the perfect place for finding hidden gems.

The star attraction at this year’s event was the world water speed record breaker, the K3 Bluebird, in which Sir Malcolm Campbell set no fewer than three world records between 1937 and 1938. This stunning hydroplane powerboat was started up several times throughout the course of the day, wowing visitors with the roar of its powerful engine. The K3 Bluebird was displayed alongside Campbell’s famous land speed record breaker, the Sunbeam 350hp, which can usually be seen on display in the National Motor Museum. This was a rare opportunity for visitors to see two of Campbell’s most famous world land and water speed record breakers on show together.

In the Display Marquee Area, The Classic Motor Boat Association put on its traditional display of members’ classic boats and antique outboard engines and the Lymington Coastguard helicopter made its annual fly-past on the morning of the event. Event sponsor, Practical Boat Owner Magazine (PBO), attracted a lot of attention on its stand, where the team were working on their newly-painted PBO Project Boat, Hantu Biru – a Snapdragon 23 bought for just £510 on eBay complete with rig, sails and interior fittings.

One lucky visitor from Petworth, West Sussex, has been announced as the winner of the ‘Win an iPad Mini’ competition, run by PBO and Beaulieu. Hundreds of people entered on the day and the winning entry form was drawn at 3.30pm on the day of the event.

Set Sail For Beaulieu Boatjumble Sunday 28th April 2013

Beaulieu’s annual Boatjumble, held in the grounds of the National Motor Museum, is this year taking place on 28th April. Now in its 36th year, the Boatjumble is the largest outdoor sale of boating items in Europe, so come along and hook some nautical bargains.

Beaulieu’s Events Manager, Judith Maddox, said: ”We were very disappointed to have to cancel the Boatjumble last year because of adverse weather conditions but were very encouraged by the positive response from stallholders, many of whom carried their stand booking forward to this year.  New bookings are now coming in well.

“The new street-style Boat Mall, introduced in 2011 proved very popular and was fully booked for 2012 so we anticipate strong bookings again for this year. Trunk Traders also goes from strength to strength with a larger area devoted to this feature for 2013.”

Thousands of new and used marine and boating items at competitive prices, spread over 1,000 stands, make for an unmissable event. With big name chandleries offering show prices, plus accessories, clothing, gadgets and literature, you can be sure of picking up some real treasures.

In the BoatMall, see new boats from leading manufacturers and brokerages plus all the latest products. See the trailerable boats up-close, try on clothing and tinker with up-to-the minute technology.

If you are looking for a used boat, head for the BoatMart which brings together a wide range of used boats, from classics to nearly new and those in need of restoration, which can be viewed before you buy.

In the enlarged Trunk Traders area, amateur jumblers who have been   clearing out their lockers, sheds and garages can sell their surplus second-hand sailing items from the boot of their car. Trading is brisk, so get there early.

Don’t miss a display by The Classic Motor Boat Association of members’ classic boats and antique outboard engines.  Members will also be on hand to talk to visitors about the activities of the Association, whose aim is to promote affordable preservation and enjoyment of classic runabouts, racing boats and engines through active rallies around the UK.

Younger visitors can also enjoy Bubble of Fun, an activity allowing you to walk on water in giant transparent balls, as well as Boats of Fun and giant nautical themed slides.

Visitors to the event will be able to enjoy all the Beaulieu attractions including the National Motor Museum’s exciting exhibition, BOND IN MOTION, with its run now extended for a further year. The exhibition showcases 50 original vehicles from the James Bond films, including the Glastron GT-150 which performed a jaw-dropping jump over an 85ft levy in Live And Let Die, and the world’s very first Wetbike from The Spy Who Loved Me.

Visitors can also see On Screen Cars, World of Top Gear, Beaulieu Abbey, and Palace House and gardens at the one, on-the-day, inclusive price of £9.70 for adults and £7.50 for children.
