Bluebird Cn7 50th Anniversary Celebration Evening On Saturday 19 July

Donald Campbell with Bluebird Lake Eyre 1963
On 17 July 1964, despite mechanical problems and unpredictable weather, Donald Campbell and his team persevered to set a new British Land Speed Record of 403.10mph in Bluebird CN7, at Lake Eyre in Southern Australia.

Fifty years on, this iconic vehicle is an integral element of a new display, For Britain & For The Hell Of It at the National Motor Museum, telling the story of British Land Speed Record achievement.

What better way to mark the 50th anniversary than to spend an evening in the company of both the iconic Bluebird CN7, and Donald Campbell’s widow, Tonia Bern-Campbell.  The evening will include a first public screening of the digitally re-mastered film ‘How Long a Mile…’, on Donald Campbell’s world record breaking year of 1964 when he took both the land and water speed records – a unique double that has never been equalled.

The screening will be followed by an exclusive dinner in the National Motor Museum and a talk by Tonia Bern-Campbell, recalling that magical time. There will also be an opportunity to explore the Museum including the new For Britain & For The Hell Of It display.

This evening is a must for any Campbell or Bluebird enthusiast. Tickets for the evening are now available, to book your individual tickets or a table, contact Leith’s at Beaulieu on 01590 614605 or email corporate@beaulieu.co.uk.

James May’s Meccano Bike On Display At The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu

James May Toy Stories

James May bike
Beaulieu is delighted to announce that James May’s Meccano Bike, created on BBC’s James May’s Toy Stories, is now on display in the National Motor Museum.

The bike, made from real Meccano, is a one-off design created during the filming of the BBC programme. The challenge was to produce a bike capable of completing the 37.8 mile Isle of Man TT circuit over three days during TT week. It had to be able to reach a speed of at least 15mph and survive the punishing long climbs and sharp descents that the historic course is famous for.

It took months of problem-solving and head-scratching to design the bike before the actual build could start. There are more than 600 nuts and bolts in each wheel alone and over 15,000 pieces of standard Meccano were used in the build, which took nine weeks to complete.

James May, who was accompanied by TV personality, Oz Clarke, on the run said: “There was a certain amount of flexibility and a couple of minor problems with bearings, steering, comfort, electricity - and the passenger - but apart from that it was a very smooth run and very heroic, I think.”

The arrival of the Meccano bike coincides with the opening of the museum’s brand new display, The Motorcycle Story, which takes visitors on a journey through motorcycling history. Machines are displayed in their historical and cultural context; tying technological developments to changing trends in fashion, style and sport. Memorabilia including clothing and trophies won by sporting greats can be seen in displays which cover a wide range of racing disciplines, road safety and British youth culture of the 1950s and 60s.

The Beaulieu attraction is also home to the World of Top Gear, which features many more unusual vehicles created by James and his fellow Top Gear presenters, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, on the BBC TV motoring show. The newly updated and refreshed exhibition includes a scaled-down version of the Dunsfold Park track where fans can drive remote-control models of some of the most popular Top Gear challenge cars in the World of Top Gear Test Track Challenge and enjoy a ride in the Top Gear simulator.*

The Enormodrome recreates the feel of the Top Gear studio, with regular features from the programme, including the Cool Wall and the Celebrity ‘Lap Times’ board, kept up to date in line with the show. Visitors can watch behind-the-scenes footage from the Top Gear production area and clips from some of the best Top Gear moments.

Admission to Beaulieu gives you access to all areas of the attraction, including the National Motor Museum, World of Top Gear, On Screen Cars, Beaulieu Abbey and Palace House and gardens. For more information, please visit www.beaulieu.co.uk or telephone 01590 612345.

About Meccano

Invented in England by Frank Hornby in 1901, Meccano was conceived as a model toy construction system comprising re-usable metal strips, plates, angle girders, wheels, axles and gears, with nuts and bolts to connect the pieces. The toy has sold under the “Erector Set” brand in the U.S. since 1913. Meccano enables the building of working models and mechanical devices and has inspired countless engineers, designers, architects and creative minds of all ages. Modern versions include new technologies to accelerate construction for even the youngest children. Meccano/Erector set toy products are currently sold in more than 50 countries. A large part of the Meccano range is manufactured in France in the historic factory of Calais. www.meccano.com

Elemental at Burghley Sculpture Garden 26th April - 2nd November, 2014

Pete Rogers, Lunicycle
The 2014 exhibition of sculpture at Burghley explores elemental geometry, the activation of kinetic sculpture through the elements, as well as chemical and alchemic associations.
Exciting kinetic sculptures include ephemeral apparitions by Andrew Lee that shimmer and dissolve from presence to absence on the slightest breeze. His Wind Ball 1 is spherical, yet its silhouette frequently softens and blurs when the wind re-orientates its silvered elements. The sculpture’s dance is a balletic and mesmerising sight, especially when sparkling in the sun. According to the artist the wind “becomes the art object” so “the sculptures are more like the instruments that make it possible.”Maggie Rose’s Twinkle Twinkle is composed of hundreds of lightweight reflective discs. A shimmering slice of funky disco, whose fluidity changes intensity according to the wind and viewing angle.

Wind also provides the locomotive power for a sculpture floating on Burghley’s lake. Lunicycle by Pete Rogers references the eight phases of the moon’s wax and wane, and similarly rotates in a circular fashion. The moon discs function as sails and the sound of them switching over their booms serves to increase the sculpture’s sailing connotations, as well as giving sonic expression to the wind’s speed and direction.

Several artists explore elemental form, akin to the singular and monolithic geometry of prehistoric sculpture, architecture and veneration. Sheila Vollmer often exploits the repetition of a unit to build a whole, but this doesn’t result in coldly formal compositions; quite the contrary. For example, the rhomboid Beast Line is vibrant and animalistic as the title suggests. It is further enlivened by its silver grey exterior encapsulating a bold red interior.

Mark Beattie’s Global Odyssey draws a centrifugal maelstrom of energy. The external definition of form is more tightly restricted to its spherical extents, whereas the interior implodes into darting linear spirals. A similarly elemental geometry is present in the sculpture of Julian Wild. His Uglifruit is a vertiginous and minimal sculpture with a twist, whereby its strict geometry has literally been knotted into itself.

Sheila Vollmer, Beast Line

More orchestrated relationships are punctually delivered by Time Piece, a neon sculpture by Andrew Stonyer. Located in the ice house, the clock face of the work’s temporal content reflects the circular architecture. His luminous sculpture charts the passage of time: a simultaneously archaic and contemporary concern. The seemingly simple means of delivery creates a rich work in which varying hues and tones of coloured light merge to illuminate one of the more fascinating buildings on the estate: an antique refrigerator that fought the advance of warming seasons.

The final group of sculptures explore the representation of the four ancient elements believed to comprise all matter on our planet, namely: earth, water, air, and fire. Here, they give cause to several sculptures that seek to give them a contemporary equivalent, including those by Nita Rao and Stuart Ian Frost.
Julian Wild, Uglifruit

Nita Rao’s On The Threshold is linear essence that seeks to depict watery concerns; a fluid sculpture that evokes both a spindly boat and skeletal leaf. It hovers and swings thanks to its suspension from a lime tree. This airborne sculpture is further distinguished by its bold colour, which derives from having been wrapped in Indian muslin ordinarily used for turbans. This sculptural mummification infuses her sculptures with a kind of latent spirituality.

A burning dynamic that reveals the transformative power of fire has been scorched by Stuart Ian Frost into the dual trunks of Iris. His pyrotechnic drawing adorns two halves of an oak felled from Jubilee Wood in Burghley’s parkland. Each has been branded with the fleur-de-lis, a heraldic motif present on some of the Elizabethan textiles in the house. The smaller trunk depicts the regal flower as a positive motif, whereas its larger counterpart converts it into a negative pattern. The burnt twins strike a powerful pose, leaning against the downward slope of the land to frame the surrounding laurels and shrubs.

Nita Rao, On The Threshold

The show comprises 24 intriguing sculptures by 16 artists that give vision to how the elements can influence sculpture’s motion and appearance. Combined with the remaining sculptures of elemental geometry, they demonstrate how a single word such as elemental can illicit many varied and significant sculptural responses, extending from the ephemeral to the permanent and to the terrestrial and cosmological.

New Look World Of Top Gear Welcomes The Kia Cee’d Reasonably Priced Car

Michael Fassbender is the Star in
a Reasonably Priced Car
Top Gear’s Kia cee’d Reasonably Priced Car, often referred to by presenter Jeremy Clarkson as the “Kia C Apostrophe D”, has finally arrived at Beaulieu’s World of Top Gear.

The cee’d appeared in series 15 to 19 of the popular TV motoring show and, despite being retired in 2013, has only just made it into the exhibition - rumour has it that The Stig may have driven it home from the last episode, making it very difficult to track down.

The celebrities who have graced this car’s humble driver’s seat include Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Rowan Atkinson, Matt LeBlanc, Ryan Reynolds, Sienna Miller, Alice Cooper, Chris Evans, will.i.am and John Prescott.

The Kia cee’d joins a whole host of vehicles at Beaulieu created by the Top Gear presenters in the newly updated and redisplayed World of Top Gear exhibition.

The ‘Enormodrome’ recreates the feel of the Top Gear studio with regular features from the programme, including the Cool Wall and the Celebrity ‘Lap Times’ board, kept up to date in line with the show. Visitors can watch behind-the-scenes footage from the Top Gear production area and clips from some of the best Top Gear moments.

The exhibition also features a scaled-down version of the Dunsfold Park track where fans can drive remote-control models of some of the most popular Top Gear challenge cars in the World of Top Gear Test Track Challenge and enjoy a ride in the Top Gear simulator.*

World of Top Gear can be seen as part of a visit to the whole Beaulieu attraction which also includes the National Motor Museum, Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey.

Not to be missed is the museum’s exciting new Land Speed Record Breakers display, For Britain & For The Hell Of It, featuring Beaulieu’s iconic land speed record cars. It tells the story of British pluck, technological mastery and national pride – alongside new vehicles with a more alternative land speed heritage. A moving audio-visual presentation transports you back to a golden age of invention, courage and patriotism and introduces you to those who are keeping the record breaking dream alive today.

Beaulieu is open every day, except Christmas Day, from 10am. For more information telephone 01590 612345 or visit www.beaulieu.co.uk

The original sculptures were commissioned by the Ministry of Works to stand outside Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s coronation back in 1953.

Made from plaster, they were later given to Canada and stone replicas made in 1958 which now reside in Kew Gardens.

Tom’s newly-imagined ‘Beasts’ were first introduced to the Queen during her 2012 Diamond Jubilee tour, and they have now taken up residence in The Pleasure Gardens at Blenheim Palace as part of a new outdoor sculpture exhibition which opens this week.

He was inspired to recreate the ‘Beasts’ to reflect their traditional values encompassing strength, harmony, purity, power, wisdom, swiftness of purpose and military might, in a contemporary context.

Tom’s use of recycled materials is also a comment on the use and sustainability of resources today where so much is considered disposable.

‘The Queen's Beasts’ by Tom Hiscocks are on display in the Pleasure Gardens at Blenheim Palace from May 1st - June 30th.

Spring Flower Festival Celebrates Chatsworth’s Love of Art

Visitors to Chatsworth can expect a flower-filled journey through the Chatsworth art collection during May as celebrated floral expert Jonathan Moseley transforms the house with more than 10,000 spring blooms.

The Florabundance flower festival runs from Friday, 9 May to Tuesday, 13 May with rooms throughout the house decorated by Jonathan Moseley, currently to be seen on TV starring in the BBC’s ‘The Big Allotment Challenge’. Taking ‘flowers in art’ as its theme Florabundance will reflect Chatsworth’s art collection, which boasts an array of paintings and sculptures from ancient Egypt up until the present day.

Visitors will start in The Painted Hall where four Dutch-master wall paintings will be re-created on marble tables in the centre of the room using delphiniums, peonies, tulips and tropical flowers including ginger lilies.

The riot of colours and floral scents is spread throughout the house: the Sculpture Gallery will be dressed entirely with red roses; the State Drawing Room, currently hosting a wartime exhibition, will be dressed in white flowers including amaryllus and white daisies suspended from silver birch trees; whilst in the Chapel, Damien Hirst’s sculpture ‘Saint Bartholomew, Exquisite Pain’ will be re-created in black anthuriums, calla lilies and blood-red amaranthus.

The Florabundance festival is included with a house and garden entry ticket but for visitors who are looking to get more hands-on, Jonathan Moseley will also be holding demonstrations and workshops in which he will share tips and advice about growing and arranging flowers at home.

Floral demonstrations: Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May – Jonathan Moseley will reflect on how historical pictorial evidence gives us clues about flowers used in ceremonies and rituals from the art of the Ancient Egyptians, Greek and Romans. He will recreate the floral visions of masters including Van Gogh and Monet.

Floral workshop, flowers in art: Monday 12th May - Jonathan Moseley will guide you as you create two floral designs, one inspired by a classic Monet canvas and another by the famous Dutch flower paintings. He will teach several floral design techniques including textured floral embroidery to create a living floral canvas and contemporary techniques to construct a modern table design.

For more information and online booking, visit www.chatsworth.org

Jonathan Moseley works as a freelance floral designer, based in Derbyshire. The world of flowers is a passion for him and he employs his love of nature and his garden as a focus for many of his designs. His humorous and friendly approach make him one of the UK’s most popular demonstrators and he can currently be seen as one of the stars of the BBC’s show  ‘The Big Allotment Challenge’.
